Effect of water on fat loss.

Water is an essential nutrient which is always taken for granted even among fitness buffs, for they might redundantly state that when you feel thirsty you should drink water.  The above  statement on water perhaps is  true, but any individual who wants to lose fat has to acknowledge the importance of water on fat loss.

Water acts as an appetite suppressant.  Your hunger pangs can be satisfied by water.  When you are manipulating your calories to lose fat, which may actually bring in a deficit of calories, hunger sets in, for hunger pain can be a very difficult task to deal with.  During those times sipping of water can be very critical to suppress these pains.  Usually when we start to eat less to bring in a calorie deficit to lose fat, reluctantly food carvings will start to develop.  So, water is given a serious consideration in suppressing appetite.  In addition, there is evidence to suggest that water can enhance fat burning, for water acts as an energy source, and so has a sparing effect on glycogen.

PS:  Try this;  whenever you start to feel hungry drink a liter of water and see how well it helps in delaying the onset of your appetite.

  1. Couch,

isn’t consumption of too much water gonna exert more pressure on kidneys? What is the maximum liters of water one can consume in a day?

    1. No. Water cannot harm your kidneys, if don’t have any kidney ailment. People with healthy kidneys can consume how much ever is required. There are no exact figures when it comes to daily dosage of water consumption.

  2. Answering Anirudh, 3 ltrs of water a day for an adult is ideal. sorry Viswa , I beg to differ here, too much water does harm your kidneys.

  3. 3 liters of water for an adult perhaps is ideal if he is not into endurance activities. A person who is an endurance athlete would have to drink more water than what is thought to be ideal. So, an ideal amount is contextual. In the same lines, Jayanthi may be referring to those studies which reported a death caused by over drinking water. But, thinking of the context which I am speaking I am suggesting to drink water whenever you are feeling hungry to suppress your appetite. Well, agreed that drinking too much harms your kidneys, but how much is too much? And what is the context? You see it opens up a plethora of questions, for drinking more water than required would surely not hurt you, as you will surely know when you have drunk more water, and you will invariably stop drinking it.

  4. My dear Vishwa,
How right are you in sharing your thoughts regarding water consumption! Infact, there exists a system in medicine called hydrotherapy in which a patient is made to consume large quantities of water to help him/her wash off the toxins and prevent formation of kidney and gall bladder stones. Thanks once again for a thought provoking blog

    sincerely yours

  5. Adding to Vishwa’s reply, it also depends on how much water is consumed at a time. Body requires water and it does not mandate that it requires all at a time.

@Jayanti if 3 liters of water is ideal for an adult, can I take all the 3 liters at a time?…to answer this, it is a blatant “NO”

On a lighter note ,forget kidneys, I envisage all my internals coming out in a puke 🙂

Since every body is unique it should be best decided by the individual… way to monitor water requirement is monitoring the urine. It should ideally be colourless…the moment it starts turing pale yellow it it time to hydrate.

  6. Exactly, Anand. Moreover, it depends on the individual, whether he/she is a couch potato, or an athlete. In addition, it also depends on the climatic conditions, and nature of the work you are involved. What if someone is involved in a manual work? He/she would invariably drink more water, for the ideal dosage would not apply there.
