It’s Time to Feel Good about Yourself

Have you ever wondered why you feel good after a gruelling workout or when you run?
The answer is endorphins. The euphoria (a state of intense happiness and wellbeing) after you finish a workout is caused by the release of endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals produced in the brain, which bind to neuro-receptors to relieve pain, enhance the immune system, reduce stress, and delay the aging process.
Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins. The release of endorphins– the feel-good factor– generally lasts for a few hours. However, the duration of this feel-good factor depends on the intensity and the duration of the workout: the more intense or the longer the workouts are, the longer the euphoric state persist. Nonetheless, it doesn’t mean you should try to annihilate or kill yourself every time you go to the gym. For example, I have observed that long distance runners have a tendency to push their boundaries each time they hit the ground, so they can experience a greater euphoric state. Running or exercising can thus become addictive.
Importantly, the social distancing during this lockdown period can lead to a severe negative state of mind. However, it now becomes paramount for us to maintain our physical and mental health. During this pandemic, the last thing we want is a weakened immune system. Moreover, the release of endorphins during this time can be a blessing. It can elevate our mood and also enhance the immune system.
Last but not least, I have been practicing meditation for more than two and a half years. I affirm that the euphoria–wonderful state of mind is readily found through meditation. Several scientific studies have come to the same conclusion. The alert state can be a powerful and highly pleasurable experience.
Stay active and meditate: it’s time to feel good about yourself.
